ESSAY — ATTENTION ECONOMICS
Human attention is the primary currency of the digital age. In traditional statecraft, power was measured by land, gold, or industrial output. In networked societies, power is measured by the capacity to capture, retain, and direct human cognitive bandwidth.
1. Attention as Capital
Attention is finite, non-renewable, and non-fungible. Every second a user spends consuming a curated narrative is a second withheld from competing information systems. Corporate monopolies and political machines build complex algorithmic architectures designed specifically to mine human cognitive bandwidth for economic value and behavioral control.
2. Algorithmic Curation & Public Space
As social interaction migrates to digital feeds, algorithmic recommendation engines become the invisible gatekeepers of civic discourse. By prioritizing outrage, fear, and tribal identity, these systems fragment public consensus, making democratic coordination increasingly fragile while maximizing platform engagement.
3. Reclaiming Cognitive Sovereignty
Navigating an environment of pervasive attention extraction requires deliberate cognitive defense. Reclaiming cognitive sovereignty means auditing one's own attention expenditure, recognizing algorithmic traps, and constructing intentional narrative channels built on verified signal rather than manufactured outrage.
